How To Mitigate Stray Voltage

If you’re building pools, you need to know how to mitigate stray voltage. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to eliminate it, but you can protect against it. Our team has worked with the laws of physics to create equipotential bonding grids that has been proven to protect the swimmer in the pool and on a wet deck.

What Causes Stray Voltage?

In order to know how to mitigate stray voltage, you should have a basic understanding of how it is created in the first place. Many electrical lines are buried, and there are other power sources that can sometimes have energy “leaks,” so to speak. When voltage escapes these contained sources, it looks for the path of least resistance: Wet versus dry.

How Can I Get Rid of It? You Can’t. But you can protect against it.

One of the reasons the stray voltage problem wasn’t particularly known about until recent decades is that in earlier construction methods, rebar was laid down in concrete to help hold it together. This metal grid creates an equipotential bonding plane. The voltage can travel across one side of the plane but can not go through it.  Therefore, when stray voltage was present in the ground, the wet swimmer standing on the wet deck was protected.

Construction methods changed, and fiber reinforced concrete became popular, no structural metal grid was required or used in the deck.  Also pavers became more popular thus no metal grid was required for those installations.  The deck is no longer protected from stray voltage with an equipotential plane.

Our EquiBond copper grid solves this problem.  It has been tested many times by different labs and agencies and in many live pool installations, and has been proven to provide safety against stray voltage in the pool shell or on the deck/perimeter surface even if it is pavers/concrete/dirt/mulch/grass, etc.
